Sco-Fro's Galloway Seafoods factory at Newton Stewart hosted a visit by Scottish Cabinet Secretary Richard Lochhead last month to celebrate its £4M investment in new processing facilities.

The investment has resulted in a four-fold increase in manufacturing capacity and the construction of a new cold store, which has boosted distribution efficiency and flexibility. It was made possible by European Fisheries Funding and facilitated by the Scottish government. The increased capacity at Galloway Seafoods has lead to business wins in the retail and foodservice sectors for coated seafood products. The quality of existing breaded seafood has been improved and new products introduced, including breaded prawns and fish fillets.

Developments have focused on adding value to the production of Galloway branded breaded scampi, which are caught, peeled and processed in Scotland, as well as Galloway Sweet Chilli King Prawns. Own-label seafood products complement branded production.

Sco-Fro Group chairman Stanley Bernard said: "The investment has led to considerable efficiency and capacity improvements at the plant. These, in turn, have resulted in business gains from some of Britain's largest retailers and foodservice distributors."

Lochhead added: "Scottish seafood plays a pivotal role in enhancing Scotland's reputation as a land of food and drink, and the processing sector that supports the industry provides a valuable contribution to our economy."
