International dairy food group Glanbia Consumer Foods is seeking to raise its profile in the UK. The firm, which has its headquarters in Ireland, has appointed logistics firm Culina to manage the distribution of its chilled products in the UK.

The first items to be introduced in May, exclusively with Asda, were Glanbia' s new range of low-fat WeightWatchers products for the large UK butter and spreads category. The products are claimed to have the lowest fat content in their category segments, with one spread having around 85% less saturated fat than standard butter.

"A bigger presence in the UK is important to us and we recognised that branded products are the right way to go," said William Wake, UK country manager for Glanbia Consumer Foods. "To be successful, we needed a supply chain partner that offered a full range of services and scalability to grow with us."

The WeightWatchers Butter Half Fat and WeightWatchers Spread are manufactured at a Glanbia facility in Belgium before being transported to Culina's Stafford distribution centre (DC). Orders are then delivered across the UK utilising Culina's network of 13 DCs.

Glanbia plans to grow its UK business significantly over the next three years by adding more branded products to its portfolio and extending partnerships with UK retailers.
