Farmer Fiddler sets up fresh crisp manufacturing

Related tags Potato

Faced with a static market for his potato crop, a Lancashire farmer decided to manufacture crisps.

John Fiddler extended and renovated an existing barn and built a mezzanine. He project managed the entire production line, sourcing the peeler, conveyors, slicer and fryer either locally or internationally including firms in Germany, America and Australia.

Genesis Process Solutions supplied a Brabender Flexwall feeder to handle the powdered flavourings and salt. The hopper, attached to the top of the feeder, is manually filled with salt and other flavourings. However, there is the facility to extend and computerise flavour delivery.

Genesis was also able to advise on feed rates and supplied a number of screws and tubes, giving Fiddler the flexibility he needed to make a range of flavours.

By the middle of 2011, Fiddler was ready to start trials. Production has now began and, while sales are deliberately being restricted to the north west, Fiddlers Lancashire Crisps, in their distinctive 40g and 150g packaging, are continuing to grow in popularity.
