New oven slashes electricity by 65%
The installation of a new oven has reaped rewards for Thomas's Bakery in Elland, West Yorkshire, which has cut its latest electricity bill by 65%.

Thomas's Bakery produces Yorkshire teacakes and its packaged brand Lottie Shaw's is a specialist cake and biscuit division that supplies Yorkshire Parkin & Parkin biscuits to independent retailers. Each week, the bakery produces around seven tonnes of teacakes, while Lottie Shaw's produces about two tonnes of Yorkshire Parkin.

Prior to installing the new oven, Thomas's Bakery was using an electric multi-deck oven, which it inherited when it took over the bakery in 1993. The oven's age and style made it quite energy inefficient and it was becoming a financial handicap. The company decided to replace it with a Thomas Chandley Compacta 4-8-8 32 tray oven with Turbo colour touch screen controllers.

To secure the purchase and installation and counter rising energy costs, the firm secured a loan from The Carbon Trust.
