Jackson’s Bakery plans £5.5m investment
Hull based Jackson’s Bakery has announced plans to spend £5.5m on two new buildings and complementary machinery at its existing site, potentially creating up to 40 new jobs.

FoodManufacture.co.uk has learnt that Hull City Council’s planning committee granted conditional approval for the bakery’s plans to expand its Derringham Road Site at the start of June.

The company employs 330 staff and sells bread products to sandwich producers, restaurants, coffee shops, distributors and retailers in 29 different countries, including Lebanon and Hong Kong.

Jackson’s has been based at the same site since 1907. A company spokeswoman said the new buildings – which will also house the new equipment – were necessary to cope with increasing demand.

Committed to city

James Watson, md, said the plans still needed to be “rubber stamped” by planning officers, with the application referred to the city planning manager who will now decide its conditions of approval, but added that “the investment is there and we’re ready to go”.

Jackson’s has already invested over £20m in its bakery’s operations over the past eight years, and Watson said:“We are growing our business, both with existing and new customers at home and abroad, and in order to maintain this success story we need to expand to increase our capacity.”

“We have a very loyal workforce, some of whom have been with us for 40 years, and we’re delighted to be here today with these plans which show our commitment to them, our business and the city.

Established in 1851, Jackson’s Bakery produces around one million loaves of bread a week. It forms part of William Jackson Food Group, which also owns the Aunt Bessie’s brand.
