New from Ishida Europe at the Interpack trade event in Dusseldorf, Germany was a high-performance, split dual-line tray sealer.

The QX-1100 SDL extends the company’s QX-1100 range with what it describes as the world’s first split dual-line tray sealer for packing fresh food into trays.

The split dual-line version will greatly increase the versatility and responsiveness of any tray line that fills trays,” a spokesperson told FoodManufacture.co.uk at the event.

Different tray sizes

The sealer can simultaneously handle two different tray types and sizes, each packed to the specifications of a different brand or manufacturer. “Each line can operate independently and to its own speed. You can run different tray sizes, pack weights and even separate products,” said the spokesperson.

Designed to handle ready meals, salads or meat and poultry products, the new tray sealer is capable of handling up to 250 packs a minute. The twin lane lines deliver roughly twice the throughput of single lanes but with a reduced footprint significantly saving factory space.

Taking 14 months to develop, the SDL model is capable of weighing, filling, tray sealing, label reading, foreign body detection, label inspection, seal testing and case or crate packing for top sealing trays.

For modified atmosphere packaging, it is possible to change gas compositions quickly and to ensure packs are gassed precisely. Incorrect gas treatments could significantly reduce the products’ shelf life, said the spokesperson.

Costly batch rejections

Label inspection technology helps to detect incorrect labeling or misplaced labels at an early stage and to avoid costly batch rejections.

The tray sealer’s easy-access design and twin lanes are also claimed to reduce the down-time needed for cleaning and maintenance.

The SDS is available worldwide. Price depends on the capacity and specification such as the type of weigher and inspections systems.
