Insects can’t escape the ‘pest-net’

Pinguin’s site in Kings Lynn can typically process, pack and cold store around 50,000t of peas in a six- to eight-week period.

This raises the issue of insect pests being brought in with vegetables from the fields and entering during deliveries.Rentokil's online reporting system, PestNetOnline allows Pinguin's quality and technical manager, Avis Baden, to monitor all of the insects that have been caught in the 62 fly control units on site. This allows her to react quickly before the insects become a major threat.

On each quarterly service of these fly control units, the Rentokil technician logs the fly count against each unit and then uploads this data, via his PDA. If unusually large numbers of insects are detected, a pest control recommendation or action will be raised to reduce the activity. This, in turn, reduces the risk of insects getting close to the finished product.
