Norbert Dentressangle (ND) aims to develop vegetable processing services at its Lowestoft freezing plant, building on a contract it announced in October last year to handle frozen peas there for Ardo.

o investigate further with Ardo brassicas and root crops are not beyond the current processing line with further investment," said Dan Myers, UK business unit director for ND. "There will be a lot of investment at Lowestoft in the new year: £2M, including £1.3M on colour sorters and £750,000 in the fabric of the building, putting in additional storage capacity.

"The business is very quick at making these decisions. It's all part of our strategy of getting very much closer to growers and customers, so we have got greater visibility of how processing and agronomy works in the supply chain."

Within a year, ND would be processing more than 15,000t of peas for frozen fruit and vegetable processor and packer Ardo, said Myers. UK pea harvesting traditionally begins in the middle of June.

The deal secures 38 jobs at ND's facility in Lowestoft, Suffolk.
