The commercial success of Cognis Nutrition & Health’s plant phytosterols has been boosted by the national launch of China’s first sterol-enriched milk by Meng Niu, China’s biggest milk firm.

Leon Chen, business manager, Cognis Nutrition & Health, Greater China, said the move had been made possible by a breakthrough at Cognis's production facility in Germany. "Sterols do not dissolve easily in water or oil, so they can create challenges for many food applications. Using our special esterification process, we found an innovative way to make it work while maintaining the milk's superior taste and appearance."

Cognis has sterol factories in the US, Germany and France. Clinical studies have shown its phytosterols can cut cholesterol by up to 15%.
