Aiming to reduce paperwork and bring productivity and compliance gains to smaller manufacturers, Applied Principles has launched a paperless quality management system for single users.

The Gerald system offers all the benefits of its larger Principles quality management counterpart. Users can track, monitor consistency and trace the parts or ingredients used to ensure quality throughout the process.

Gerald comprises a personal digital assistant, which includes a temperature probe, camera, barcode reader, and connects wirelessly to a laptop. It can be used for bespoke quality checks and to monitor health and safety.

JJ Kotze, md of Applied Principles, says: "Demand for a single user system at an affordable price has been high.

"Our current customers are enjoying huge gains in quality, productivity, accountability and cost-savings but, so far, smaller companies such as artisan producers, small bakery firms, farmers, butchers, growers and other entrepreneurial food businesses have been denied access to the sophisticated yet simple system we can offer.

"Gerald does everything our Principles Quality Management system does - only it's operated by a single user - making it a totally practical option for businesses where one person is responsible for quality control."
