Braby, the world's leading manufacturer of silos, tanks and fabrications has recently upgraded a non Atex-compliant sugar handling system for confectionery retailer Thorntons.

Atex is the name commonly given to the legal requirements for controlling explosive atmospheres and the suitability of equipment and protective systems used in them.

Braby installed a brand new granulated sugar vacuum conveying line to four distribution points. It replaces an old system used at Thorntons' plant in Derbyshire which had been suffering continuous failures and line blockages.

Thorntons processes over 45t of sugar a week and wanted to upgrade the conveying system to make the process more efficient and to meet the latest Atex requirements.

The new system has also allowed Thorntons to save money by buying sugar in bulk.
