Mineral supplement that is set to become a clear winner

Ingredients supplier Marigot, which specialises in the production of natural mineral products, has added to its Aquamin range.

Rich in marine calcium, magnesium and various trace minerals, Aquamin Soluble will be of particular interest to manufacturers that want to create attractive, clear or carbonated beverages with an added mineral boost.

The product - derived from the red seaweed Lithothamnion corallioides - is a multi-mineral source rendered acid soluble on a base of organic acids. Optimum results can be achieved in beverages with a pH between three and 6.5, which enables the ingredient to retain active minerals in a soluble form in the end product. This improves the bioavailability potential of the nutrients and prevents sediment being formed, something often associated with mineral fortification.

David O'Leary, Marigot's commercial manager, says: "It allows producers to enhance the calcium RDI [recommended daily intake] in all types of beverages with no impact on taste or flavour. Applications include sports and performance drinks, healthy beverages, flavoured waters and juices."

Aquamin Soluble also increases the mineral content of a variety of beverages while avoiding the unappealing, cloudy appearance that often compromises consumer enjoyment, he adds.

Further trials are under way to confirm the nutritional benefits of the ingredient.
