Greencore has moved into the sushi market with the acquisition of Liverpool-based Sushi San for an undisclosed sum.

Sushi San, which employs about 20 staff and supplies local businesses and one major retailer with sushi products from its factory in Crosby, would give Greencore a foothold in a £45M market growing at 48% year-on-year, said Di Walker, md of Greencore Sandwiches.

“This small but important step takes us into a new and complementary area to our existing sandwich and snack salads business."

Greencore declined to comment about its long-term plans for the site but confirmed that in the short term it would be integrated into the Greencore network and run by Graham Simpson - previously interim site director at Greencore Sandwiches` site at Park Royal in north west London.

Group communications director Jonathan Grant-Nicholas said: "The company's founders will work with Graham for a period of time to ensure a smooth integration."
