Naturally occurring in citrus fruits and other fruits and vegetables, vitamin C has now been launched by DSM Nutritional Products as a high-quality additive. Its Quali-C range, which is produced in Europe's only vitamin C plant - in Dalry, Scotland - will enable soft drinks manufacturers to tap into a product that offers reliability and consistency of supply, the company says.
Vitamin C is essential for well-being. It is important as an antioxidant, protecting body tissue from the damage of oxidation and protecting cells against the effects of free radicals, which are potentially harmful by-products of the body's metabolism. They can cause cell damage that may contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Scientists have also found vitamin C to be an effective antiviral agent.
