Superfruit doing berry nicely

Growing interest in healthy eating and widespread belief in the health benefits of cranberries has led to increasing demand for ingredients based on the superfruit. Now supplier J O Sims has reported growing interest in its Ocean Spray range.

Doug Mackay, general manager for ingredients at the company, puts it down to the "explosive demand for cranberry products" and "the convincing processing benefits of the fruit being very appealing to manufacturers"

He adds: "We work closely with our customers to help them create attractive products that stand out from the crowd and produce real consumer demand. Particularly successful in cereals, cereal bars and baked goods, cranberries add an air of sophistication and help achieve premium positioning."

Research in the US has revealed that consumers are willing to pay more for products that contain sweetened dried cranberries - which are regarded as a superfruit.

J O Sims offers include ingredients such as cranberries in powder, purée and concentrate form and sweetened, dried cranberries.
