Rexam plans to launch its Sleek, slender can shape in Europe in the 330ml size, challenging steel in key markets as the balance across the EU shifts towards aluminium for beverages.
Ball Packaging Europe has the same can shape in steel. But Rexam market development director Göte Nylin says: "Aluminium usually gives a better shelf-life, especially for sensitive products like mineral water." In the US, the aluminium Sleek can has been available in three sizes for years. But Nylin says: "We have no plans to go beyond the one size in Europe."
Production of Sleek is expected to start at the Recklinghausen, Germany, plant at the tail end of this year.
