Cranswick Country Foods’ state-of-the-art sausage production centre, Lazenby’s, in Hull, is equipped with some of the latest processing technology and machinery. Among the kit installed by the company is the latest Alpma SAN 80 WK sausage wrapper.

A faster and more hygienic version of the V64 WK, the SAN 80 WK achieves nearly a 40% increase in packing rate and is capable of reaching speeds of up to 55 packs/min. The machine, which cost £170,000, comes with a triple piston designed to handle soft products and ensures accurate folds and pack wraps.

Two operators load the string of linked sausages into stainless steel pockets which hold eight chipolatas or six standard sausages. A flexible vacuum ring holds the tension of the paper around the product.

Sausages can be loaded automatically, but at Cranswick two operators are used because of the natural casings specified.

A feature of the machine is its ability to use a variety of packaging material from plastic, paper, parchment and even metalised film.
