McCain says goodbye Mr fat chips
Frozen potato products giant McCain has slashed fat and salt levels across its foodservice range in a bid to improve the nutritional profile of its products.
Potato Smiles are now pre-cooked in sunflower oil instead of vegetable oil to reduce cholesterol and polyunsaturated fat, says foodservice sales and marketing director Bill Bartlett. "We will switch several other products to sunflower oil in the next few months."
Added salt has been slashed by 50% in Potato Smiles and Waffles and by 100% in Speedsters, he says. "We have also reduced the fat and salt in some of our pizzas by 20%."
New lower fat 'light' fries developed for caterers contain 6.5% fat when cooked compared to the 8-10% in the standard equivalent, he says. "This is a substantial reduction."
