One year payback on wastewater treatment

Northern Ireland potato crisp manufacturer Tayto has installed a new Centriquip decanter centrifuge for wastewater treatment, which it expects to pay for itself in around 12 months.

Tayto has two Centriquip machines: one handles starch from the cold-slice effluent stream; the second dewaters process water used for washing the potatoes.

The starch machine operates throughout the day to reduce the starch-laden effluent stream to 60% dry solids. This cake has a high market value for use in animal feeds. The other machine dewaters process water recovering the soil and sand washed off the potatoes for use as an agricultural fertiliser.

Savings come from two sources. First from the revenue from the sale of the starch. Secondly, the company benefits from reduced effluent disposal costs. Much of the process water can now be recycled, reducing the amount of water used.
