A tomato-based drink, claimed to benefit the heart and circulation, could hit supermarket shelves this autumn.

The fruit juice drink, called Sirco, will contain a novel technology -- CardioFlow -- developed by Provexis, a manufacturer of medical and functional ingredients.

CardioFlow is a proprietary extract of tomato, containing a range of components that inhibit platelet aggregation, a part of the blood-clotting process that can cause heart attacks and strokes. Strokes can cause many seriously debilitating physical conditions in the elderly and obese. The product also works to protect against thrombosis.

Provexis has announced plans to merge with functional foods company Nutrinnovator, this summer. Developer of Altú cereal bars, Nutrinnovator has the marketing and distribution experience that Provexis needs.

Provexis is said to be in discussions with the big high-street retailers, including the multiples, to secure distribution channels for Sirco. It aims to launch the product in two major UK retailers in the final quarter of 2005.

The pack will carry the claim 'Helps to maintain a healthy heart and benefits circulation'.

The merged companies plan to develop revenues from licensing the CardioFlow technology to international brand owners.
