Meat-free manufacturer Marlow Foods is aiming to run a radio frequency identification (RFID) trial before the year-end to see if it can build a business case in advance of retailers asking for RFID-tagged cases and pallets.

Inventory manager Craig Todd said that the pilot would probably be in two parts, testing the benefits of tagging stainless steel bins of raw materials entering the business and cases and pallets leaving it.

Todd said: “We’ve got a small project team working on it and sign-off from the board of directors, and we want to be prepared if Tesco comes along in the latter part of next year and says it wants us to tag cases or pallets.”

He added: “They have recently asked us to supply frozen product to their Daventry distribution centre with serial shipping container codes (SSCCs), which our distributor Reed Boardall is doing at the consolidation centre, and RFID may well be the next step.”
