Damrow, which is part of the Carlisle Process Systems group, has designed and commissioned a new 18,000-litre enclosed cottage cheese vat at the production facility of Arla Foods in Skovde, Sweden.

Extensive testing was undertaken on the new equipment before it became operational, including water trials and checking that cleaning-in-place systems were functioning correctly. Another important factor was to ensure that the cottage cheese could be produced in accordance with Arla's product requirements.

"In fact, the quality of the end product was found to be better than that from existing vats resulting in a yield of about 5% of extra cheese per batch," reports project manager Tyggve Ekstroem.

Key features of the vat include exact cutting of the coagulum, accurate and reliable control of heating, and a fully programmable control panel which enables operators to program the vat to meet different production requirements.
