A man has been charged with stealing a trailer packed with about £20,000 worth of biscuits.

The arrest this week came after biscuit raid at a Welsh factory owned by Burton’s Food, which makes Jammie Dodgers and Cadbury’s chocolate fingers, in June.

Three other men were arrested in relation to the crime in September but their cases have now been “temporarily discontinued”, according to police.

Trailer found in Cheshire

The vehicle laden with biscuits was stolen from the Burton’s factory on Ty Coch Way in Cwmbran, South Wales, at 3.10am on June 17. The empty trailer was later found in Warrington, Cheshire.

Police arrested a 24-year-old man from Liverpool on Wednesday (October 21) and charged him with theft and travelling in a vehicle taken without its owner’s consent.

The man was remanded to appear at Newport Magistrates Court on Thursday (October 22).

‘Temporarily discontinued’

“The case against the three other defendants previously charged has been temporarily discontinued,” a Gwent Police spokeswoman said.

Burton’s, the UK’s second largest biscuit manufacturer, bakes market-leading brands such as Maryland Cookies and Wagon Wheels.

The business, headquartered in St Albans, operates manufacturing sites in Cwmbran, Blackpool, Edinburgh, Llantarnam, and a chocolate refinery in Moreton.

Meanwhile, police confirmed that there had been development in the investigation into a separate theft near Lockerbie in Scotland on October 8.

Thieves took a trailer containing 9t of Kellogg’s breakfast bars worth about £45,000 from a lorry park at about 2.30am.

A Police Scotland spokesman this week said that the trailer had later been found in North Wales.
