The Food Manufacture Group is staging a free one-hour webinar at 11am on Thursday February 20 2014 to arm food and drink manufacturers with all the latest information about the Food Information Regulation (FIR).

In partnership with law firm DWF, we are assembling an expert line-up of speakers to uncover how FIR legislation is likely to affect your business. Taking part will be Alasdair Tucker, head of regulatory affairs, at Premier Foods and Dominic Watkins, partner and head of the food group at DWF. To register for this online event email Michael.stones@wrbm.com.

Watkins told FoodManufacture.co.uk food labelling law was vitally important. “It governs what information must be on the packaging and where,” he said.

‘New rules to grapple with’

“While food and drink manufacturers deeply understand the existing tried and tested labelling rules, the new rules change the goalposts. From the minimum font size for certain information, to different nutrition boxes to different requirements for labelling of allergens, country of origin, frozen and previous frozen food and front-of-pack nutrition signposting, there will be a host of new rules to grapple with.”

Changes to the minimum font size on packaging is likely to have a particularly far reaching impact on food and drink manufacturers, he said.

“Key will be the changes in the minimum font size, as this is likely to mean less space for other messaging. Therefore, businesses will need to be creative to ensure the product remains attractive to consumers while complying with the law.”

Premier Foods

Meanwhile, the contributor from Premier Foods will explain how one of Britain’s largest food and drink manufacturing businesses is arming itself with information and preparing for the introduction of the new legislation.

Two key dates concerning the labelling changes are December 14 2014, when the new rules come into force and December 14 2016. On that date new nutrition labelling requirements come into force.
