Online retail giant Amazon is to create 1,200 permanent jobs at a new fulfilment centre in Warrington, as it continues its drive to recruit 5,000 workers in the UK.

It will recruit for a number of roles, including operations managers, engineers, human resources and IT specialists.

Warrington is one of four new fulfilment centres being opened by Amazon this year. Last year it announced it would open fulfilment centres in Daventry, Doncaster and Tilbury, creating more than 2,300 jobs.

Amazon said it was increasing the size of its UK fulfilment centre network to meet increasing customer demands, expand selection and enable small and medium sized enterprises selling on Amazon Marketplace to boost their business.

Amazon robotics technology

The Warrington centre will be equipped with Amazon robotics technology, which will speed up order processing time, said the company. It will also reduce labour tasks by moving the shelves to employees.

Director of UK customer fulfilment Stefano Perego said: “We are thrilled to begin recruitment for 1,200 new permanent roles in Warrington with competitive wages and comprehensive benefits starting on day one.

“The Amazon teams are dedicated to innovating in our fulfilment centres to increase efficiency of delivery while enabling greater selection at lower costs for our customers.”

Amazon is also to create 1,650 full time positions for its first UK receive centre, which will open in Coventry next year. The centre will serve as a central hub to receive and sort millions of products sold on Amazon.co.uk.

Recruit 5,000 full-time workers

The retail giant revealed plans to recruit 5,000 full-time workers in February, taking its total UK workforce to more than 24,000.

Amazon UK country manager Doug Gurr previously said: “We are creating thousands of new UK jobs, including hundreds of apprenticeship opportunities, as we continue to innovate for our customers and provide them with even faster delivery, more selection and better value.”

Meanwhile, Bakkavor is continuing its nationwide recruitment drive, revealing plans to hire more than 300 staff across three of its sites in the past two weeks.
