Aldi has revealed plans to open 80 new stores across the UK as part of its expansion strategy, creating 5,000 new jobs.

The new roles will include around 100 store manager positions and 500 assistant store manager vacancies.
Store managers could expect a starting salary of £43,000, rising to £56,000, a company pension and comprehensive training package.

Aldi is looking for ambitious individuals with a passion for retail who are seeking a long-term career with the business, Aldi’s regional md Ruth Doyle said.

Right candidates for continued expansion

“To support our continued expansion and the ongoing performance of our existing stores, it’s important that we attract the right candidates across all of our roles,” she said.

“Aldi provides all staff with extensive training and development opportunities to ensure they have the necessary skills to make a real success of their career.”

The new stores will take the discount retailer’s total outlets to 700 and recruitment is already underway for both new and existing stores, with a variety of part- and full-time opportunities nationwide.

Aldi’s expansion will create more pressure for Britain’s big four supermarkets – Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda and Morrisons.

Aldi also has around 450 deputy store manager vacancies for those individuals with retail experience looking to take their first steps into management.

Deputy store manager roles start from 30 hours per week, with a starting salary of £9.40 per hour rising to £11.00 per hour, plus £4.00 extra per hour when managing the store.

All Aldi UK hourly-rate employees now receive a living wage, minimum rate of £8.40 – £9.45 per hour in Greater London.

Best supermarket employer

This move helps Aldi maintain its position as the best supermarket employer in Britain, it claimed.

Aldi has also invested in its academy, located at its regional distribution centre in Bolton. The academy comprises around 13 recruitment and training specialists to ensure the business continues to provide comprehensive and innovative training packages for its employees.

Aldi and Lidl took a 10% share of the UK grocery market in November, according to Kantar Worldpanel.

The discounters also signed a distribution agreement with 2 Sisters Food Group, last month.

Earlier this month, Morrisons pledged to use its food manufacturing arm to drive down costs, as it fights against the discounters.
