A world record In the bag? Corkers hopes to capture the world record for the world's biggest packet of crisps

The world’s biggest crisp bag – weighing in at more than a tonne – has been made by Cambridge firm Corkers Crisps.

Workers at the factory at Little Downham, near Ely toiled for more than 20 hours to fill the 5.5m tall bag with sea-salt flavoured crisps, succeeding only at the second attempt.

Corkers Crisps md Rod Garnham said: “As is normal with a world record attempt, we've had a few issues.

“It is big – if you stood in the top window of your house and looked out, it would be higher than that,” he told BBC News.

The crisps were loaded on to a lift and then dropped into the giant packet.

A whopping 1,140kg

Guinness World Records is expected to verify the record – a whopping 1,140kg – within the next two weeks.

Cash raised by the giant crisp bag will be donated to cancer charity the Liam Fairhurst Foundation, dedicated to helping young patients.

Meanwhile, earlier this month Garnham told FoodManufacture.co.uk that the Ely plant could produce an extra 120,000 crisp bags a day, after the completion of its factory expansion programme.
