A certified chain for producing oats guaranteed to be 100% free of gluten-containing grains such as wheat, barley and rye has been developed by Dutch firm Vandinter Semo in conjunction with Wageningen University.

Claimed to be the first of its kind in western Europe, the gluten-free (GF) oats are grown according to a strict farming regimen.

Exclusive cultivation

Seeds are cultivated exclusively on Dutch farmland where no grain crops have been grown for at least the previous eight years.

To achieve this, Vandinter Semo works closely together with a network of farmers, claiming to provide them with careful guidance.

After being harvested, the GF oats go through a strictly controlled process of cleaning and inspection.

Seed breeding sector

The technology and methods used to do this originated in the seed breeding sector and were developed further by Vandinter Semo in cooperation with Wageningen University.

As an example, Vandinter Semo developed its own oat peeling production line that is used exclusively for peeling gluten-free products.

The firm also markets its GF oats for the production of semi-manufactured products. Customers can choose from oats, ground oats, toasted oats and extruded oats.
