Asda, Co-op and M&S all forced into allergen recalls
Fruit and nut bars and cereal manufacturer Eat Natural was also compelled to recall one of its fruit and fibre bars because it contained peanuts not mentioned on the label.
The coconut, apricots, oats and spelt flakes breakfast bar was found to contain plum and peanuts due to a manufacturing error. The product had been sold in Waitrose stores.
Eat Natural pulled the product from shelves and issued point-of-sale notices for the 4 x 40g multi-pack with a ‘best before’ date of June 2016.
Potentially deadly risk
Peanuts can cause a potentially deadly health risk to anyone suffering from an allergy to nuts.
Every year there are 4,500 hospital admissions due to allergy attacks and 10 deaths, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) claimed.
Asda had to withdraw pots of its Cheese Sauce Mix with a ‘best before’ end of November 2016 because it contained curry sauce – containing mustard and wheat – not labelled on the product.

This could pose a health threat for anyone with an allergy to mustard and/or wheat or an intolerance to gluten, the FSA said.
Consumers with an allergy to egg were put at risk when a M&S Vegetable Crispbake product was found to contain a small quantity of egg not labelled.
The affected product was M&S’s 227g Vegetable Crispbake with ‘use by’ date of November 7 2015.
Return product
Consumers that suffer from an allergy to egg were advised to return the product to the store they purchased it from for a full refund.
The Co-operative Food withdrew packs of its Loved by Us 10 Piece Empanada Selection which contained sesame and prawns.
These ingredients were not mentioned on the product label, which meant the product was a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to sesame and/or crustaceans (prawns).
