Confectionery manufacturer Cadbury is to expand production at its factory in Birmingham, following a £75M investment.

The Bournville factory will now produce Cadbury’s Dairy Milk Oreo and Dairy Milk Tiffin chocolate bars, as the manufacturer aimed to improve the site’s productivity and ability to compete with its rivals across Europe.

Cadbury owner Mondelēz’s northern Europe president Glenn Caton said: “These great tastes are the first additional products that we are welcoming to Bournville following our multi-million pound investment in the UK.

“It shows that our investment has paid off and that Bournville is now competing in the ‘Premier League’ of European factories.”

‘Premier League of European factories’

The factory is forecast to produce about 28M bars of Oreo chocolate a year, which will start to appear in stores this autumn. Bournville would be able to produce about 20,000 Tiffin bars an hour.

Caton highlighted the views from the shopfloor, with comments from Bournville apprentice Oliver Marnock, who said the announcement had created a high degree of excitement among the factory’s employees.

“Bournville is the home of Cadbury and the heart of chocolate manufacturing and it’s brilliant that we can now compete with overseas chocolate factories,” said Marnock. “We are looking forward to welcoming even more products to Bournville in the future.”

Mondelēz International has invested more than £200M into UK manufacturing, research and innovation since 2010, including a £75M investment in its Bournville factory to create four new production lines to increase productivity.

Invested £18M into creating jobs

The company also invested £18M in creating jobs and new manufacturing techniques across its Global chocolate Centre of Excellence in Bournville and its Reading Science Centre on the Reading University campus.

Caton added: “Today’s [July 6] announcement demonstrates two of our major strengths: bringing innovative new treats to the nation with great products like Cadbury Dairy Milk Oreo and listening to what people want, which has driven us to launch a comeback for an old favourite Tiffin.”

Opened in 1879, the Bournville factory is home to Mondelēz’s chocolate research and development centre where all Cadbury products are invented.

The factory produces a number of Cadbury products, including Dairy Milk, Giant Buttons, Wispa, Easter Eggs and Cadbury Crème Eggs. It produced more than 80M Crème Eggs over Easter this year.
