2 Sisters Food Group will invest £1.4M at its St Merryn meat plant in south Wales, in a bid to improve efficiency and secure 700 jobs.

The investment, which began at the end of July, would be used to modernise the facility’s beef boning hall, and to improve quality and process control, said 2 Sisters. The cash injection would also secure jobs for the Methyr Tydfil site’s 700 workers.

2 Sisters red meat md Andrew Cracknell said: “The investment in our cutting operation will future proof jobs at the site, and provide the platform for additional growth in beef sales over the next decade.”

‘Future proof jobs’

The million pound investment was part of 2 Sisters’ Better Before Bigger strategy, the manufacturer said. The investment came after 2 Sisters invested a further £10M in its south Wales Chinese prepared meals facility.

2 Sisters ceo Ranjit Singh said: “Investment in the boning hall will ensure that we create a leaner, more efficient supply chain at our flagship facility in Wales.”

“I’m confident that our Better Before Bigger strategy, with its efficiency platform, will put us in a good place for the long term.”

‘A good place for the long term’

St Merryn’s Merthyr Tydfil facility has the capacity to slaughter and de-bone 2,400 cattle and 24,000 lamb a week. St Merryn Food Group has two other sites – both in Cornwall.

The investment at the site came nine months after 2 Sisters planned to cut 350 jobs at the site. The manufacturer planned to close the retail packing department at the site, and move it to the company’s facility in Bodmin, Cornwall.

2 Sisters said the job cuts were the only way the business could survive, and prosper for the long term.
