Glebe Farm Foods has claimed that its PureOaty Barista product has the lowest carbon footprint among oat drinks on the UK market.

The claim comes after the oat producer received new carbon reporting results from environmental impact assessment organisation My Emissions, which showed that PureOaty Barista has a footprint of 0.268kg CO2e per litre.

According to My Emissions data, this score is around half that of the average oat drink available in the UK (0.576 kgCO2e per litre) and 78% lower than dairy milk (1.201 kgCO2e per litre).

Glebe Farm did not share any further data to illustrate how its score compared to other brands operating in the UK.

‘Commitment to sustainability and innovation’

In order to limit its impact on the environment, Glebe Farm has invested extensively in renewable energy generation and circular waste reduction.

Utilising oat chaff to create heat and steam, the company has significantly reduced its energy consumption, while solar power supplements its electricity use and decreases reliance on non-renewable energy sources.

Glebe Farm also grows, processes and packs all of its products on-site, where it boasts a £10m Tetra Pak plant. This ensures that the entire process from milling to packing covers just 150 metres.

According to the oat producer, packing on-site and sourcing locally grown oats has allowed it to eliminate up to 100,000 miles of transport from its operations.

“The exceptionally low carbon score of PureOaty Barista highlights our commitment to sustainability and innovation,” said managing director Philip Rayner.

“A prime example is our development of a system that enables us to mill oats using steam power from the heat generated by our chaff, thus avoiding the use of fossil fuels.

“This fantastic milestone not only sets PureOaty Barista apart as a market-leading product but also demonstrates our dedication to reducing environmental impact in every aspect of our production. We’re always looking at how we can evolve and do better and through our partnership with My Emissions, we’ll continue to track and improve our operations to ensure we reach our net zero target by 2028.”
