Listeria contamination, undeclared allergens and small pieces of plastic and metal all sparked food and drink recalls over the past two weeks.

Lidl, Birds Eye and Iceland Foods were among the food and drink firms that were forced to pull products off store shelves over the festive period.

Lidl listeria recall

Lidl GB has extended its recall of Smoked Trout to include Smoked Salmon Products produced by St James Smokehouse, because these products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Symptoms caused by this organism can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea. In rare cases the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, such as meningitis.

Plastic found in Birds Eye burger

Birds Eye has the taken precautionary action of recalling Birds Eye Original 4 Beef Quarter Pounders with Onion because they may contain small pieces of plastic. The affected products were sold in Asda stores in the south west of England and South Wales.

Birds Eye apologised for the inconvenienced caused by the recall and offered full refunds for consumers who returned the affected products to the stores they were bought from.

Cake recalled after metal piece found

Almondy AB has recalled its Almondy Almond cake with Daim because a metal piece has been found in the product, which makes it unsafe to eat.

Originally sold in Ikea stores, consumers were advised to return the product to where they bought it in order to receive a full refund.

Undeclared peanut and egg in dessert bar

Iceland Foods has been forced to pull packs of Mars Dessert Bars after it was discovered there was peanut and egg in the product that were not mentioned on the label.

This was the result of a packaging error, which saw some packs incorrectly packaged with Snickers Dessert Bar. This meant the product was a possible health risk to anyone with an allergy to peanuts and/or an allergy or intolerance to eggs.
