Five food manufacturers made it to the final of this hard-fought category. Read who is in the running for this prestigious award.

Arla

This year the company launched it Arla Performance System (APS). Its APS Foundations training is focused on how the business can upskill its teams to build competence and knowledge to drive efficiency improvements and support its Future26 strategy.

APS Foundations is an instructor led training supported by video, hands on working and best practice examples.

The training has been developed inhouse and takes on a blended learning approach through theory teach points supported by interactive games.

There is also practical application using a Lego based business simulation game where each participant in the training has a hands-on role and can practice working together as a team to make improvements.

Bakkavor

Bakkavor has c.19,000 colleagues operating from 46 sites across the UK, USA and China.

Historically, the induction of new joiners was achieved by running a one-day intensive induction, covering all the compliance and procedural knowledge a new joiner would need, delivered in a lecture-based format.

The amount of information was overwhelming and often very technical. There were also issue with a large percentage of new joiners having English as a second language.

Bakkavor focused on developing a standardised induction across sites that as well as equipping new joiners to be factory ready, would also provide them with a deeper understanding of the company.

The new induction has seen a doubling of the duration of induction involving a welcome by a senior member of the management team, and a free lunch social event, themed around the products created on site.  Workbooks were also introduced to personalise the learning experience and there is video content to support training.

Charlie Bigham’s

In May 2021, Bigham's Academy introduced a Front-Line Leader and Manager development programme.

The company analysed its training needs which considered future needs of the business and expectations of the Manager/Leader group. It identified a Leadership gap developing because of its rapid growth.

Front-line managers were identified as key to its levels of engagement and retention in the production teams and as a pipeline of leadership talent.

A 9-month program was designed by a cross functional team with the objective to give learners a comprehensive understanding of their role expectations.  This was achieved through workshops delivered by subject matter experts alongside the Academy team, with on-the-job learning, self-reflection and 1:1 coaching.

Moy Park

Moy Park has established seven Academies across a broad and varied range of business units.

This enables team members from all levels to become involved in assessing their personal competency levels. They are able to access training activities and resources through each be-spoke Academy, which enables them to learn at their own pace with the range of development activities made available to them.

The Commercial Academy was the pilot and its success saw the business recognise the potential to invest in a multi-disciplinary Academies strategy to help it deliver on its vision of creating better opportunities for its team members.

The Academy strategy seeks to develop and grow the talent. The company has embarked upon internally facilitating and expanding theconcept to all remaining business areas in a phased approach.

Princes

Princes has introduced a training pillar called Lean Deployment as part of its Princes Operational Excellence Strategy.

Lean Deployment is focused upon developing and deploying a ‘Princes Operating System’ [POS]; based around Lean Principles, systems, tools, and behaviours, required to maximise and develop the potential of its employees across all levels and functions.

This deployment will be made across all its manufacturing sites in ambient food and drink, both in the UK and overseas over the next three years.

A training and coaching program has been developed named the ‘POS Academy Lighthouse Improvement Program’. This involves an  18-week cycle with a two weeks’ site POS Lean Framework maturity assessment.
