Digital technology can benefit businesses of all sizes and does not have to cost the earth, delegates will hear at the next free Food Manufacture webinar, which is sponsored by Siemens.

How digital technology can cut costs and boost efficiency ​will feature case studies from Pete Hooper, production manager at £115m cheese brand Wyke Farms and Richard Morris, production director at The Bury Black Pudding Company.

Keith Thornhill – head of food and beverage, Siemens - and Carolyn Newsham – financing partner for Siemens Digital Industries - will also give practical examples of ways Siemens has worked with food processors.

Hooper joined Wyke Farms more than 18 years ago, immediately kick-starting its digital journey and enabling the business to become a trailblazer in the dairy category in terms of digital implementation. He began by implementing its first supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system analysing data on cheese production.

Fast forward to now and Hooper is changing and upgrading Wyke Farms's enterprise replenishment system and looking at its material requirements planning system in a bid to cut packaging costs through better forecasting.

Hooper told Food Manufacture​ food and drink manufacturers had many misconceptions about digital technology, including that the initial investment often takes years to pay for itself. He claims one big project he was involved with cost £3m, but achieved return on investment within eight months.

The Bury Black Pudding Company

Morris spearheads operations for The Bury Black Pudding Company - a smaller business, which nonetheless supplies top supermarkets including Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, The Co-op and Morrisons. He joined in 2003. Since then he has grown production volumes from six tonnes to 100 tonnes a week. The firm's turnover is close to £10m and it employs 112 staff.
