The British Nutrition Foundation (BNF), charity GroceryAid and food redistribution firm FareShare all announced senior appointments this week.

BNF’s board of trustees revealed Elaine Hindal, chief executive of the charity Drinkaware, will take over as chief executive in the new year.

Hindal will take over leadership duties from Judy Buttriss and Roy Ballam, who are stepping down from their roles as director general and managing director respectively after many years of service.

Commenting on Hindal’s appointment, BNF chair of the board of trustees Colin Dennis said: “Elaine has an enormous depth of operational leadership experience in the charity and food sectors, where she has established a strong track record of effectively translating evidence-based scientific information into accessible and relevant communication to promote healthy lifestyles.

“We are therefore delighted to welcome her to the Foundation where this experience will prove invaluable.”

Leadership experience

Hindal has worked in a number of senior leadership roles within both the charity sector as well as the food and healthcare industries in the UK and the US and holds a master’s degree in Occupational Psychology.

She is a Trustee of The Royal Mencap Society and Change Grow Live, a national alcohol and drug treatment charity, as well as being a member of the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations.

Today (12 October) also saw GroceryAid announce the appointment of Allan Leighton – chairman of the Co-operative Group, BrewDog and Pizza Express – as its new president, effective 1 January 2022.

He will succeed Charles Wilson, who will complete his tenure as GroceryAid President in December 2021.

“The grocery trade has been a huge part of my life since I was a child, and I was honoured to be asked to take on this vital role,” said Leighton.

Support during COVID

“As we emerge from Covid, I plan to work with the GroceryAid team to ensure the charity is there for all colleagues in those times when they need our support. I look forward to building on the excellent momentum generated by my predecessors.”

Meanwhile, food redistribution charity FareShare has announced the appointment of Simon Millard as its new director of food, after the retirement of former head of food, Jo Dyson.

Most recently UK commercial director at IRI and channel director at Premier Foods, Millard also spent 10 years in senior roles at Mars and has more than 20 years’ experience within the food industry.

Commenting on Millard’s new role with the charity, chief executive Lindsay Boswell said: “We’re delighted to have Simon join FareShare. He brings with him a wealth of experience to this new role and will help us reach our ambitious targets to redistribute even more surplus food to charities over the coming years.”
