Drinks firm Square Root, which makes non-alcoholic cocktails, sodas and tonics has bolstered its senior team with the appointment of Nick McKay as its new commercial director.

In his new role, McKay will provide strategic support to co-founders Ed Taylor and Robyn Simms and guidance to Square Root’s sales team.

McKay brings his extensive experience within the fast-moving consumer goods industry to his new role at Square Root. He spent the past ten years in senior roles across the likes of Monster Energy, Remedy Drinks and Jimmy’s Iced Coffee.

Economic recovery

“I am really pleased to be joining Square Root at this exciting time,” said McKay. “With a hugely successful crowdfunding campaign behind us and the economy poised to return to work, this is a crucial period to consolidate on Square Root’s strong market position and secure future success.

“I look forward to supporting Ed and Robyn, and helping the business to grow, scale and reach more new consumers.”

His appointment followed the close of a £570,000 equity crowdfund raise – smashing its £250,000 target by more than 200%. Square Root plans to use the money to start offering canned versions of its drinks from next month.

Crowdfunding campaign

Simms added: “After closing off our crowdfunding campaign at the end of last month, we’ve stepped up our sales and marketing efforts, and are thrilled to be welcoming Nick to our team.

“With over ten years’ experience, he brings a huge wealth of valuable industry knowledge and a real passion for challenger brands to the table.”

Established in 2012, Square Root has drinks on trial across 70 Sainsbury’s stores nationwide.

The company recently won new accounts to supply Vietnamese Street Food chain Pho Restaurants and expanded its distribution network with LWC Drinks as the on-trade begins to reopen in the UK.

Meanwhile, the John Lewis Partnership has appointed Hovis chief executive Nish Kankiwala to its board as non-executive director, effective this month.
