The coronavirus outbreak has prompted food and drink supply chain businesses to form a united emergency working group to ensure the industry can continue to feed the nation.

Led by consultancy Scala, the COVID-19 Supply Chain Collaboration Group aims to strengthen manufacturers’ and suppliers’ links with retailers, foodservice and logistics companies.

More than 20 manufacturers have pledged their support to the group, with more expected to join over the coming days.

Coordinating the industry

The group will coordinate industry initiatives, share ideas and collaborate with one another and the wider industry. Its goal will be supplying the UK with food and drink and ensuring businesses and consumers have the essentials they need to survive the pandemic.

Members will be able to share ideas in a private discussion forum. Weekly virtual conferences will also be held with all members invited to collaborate and membership completely free to all organisations that wish to join.

Scala said it would act as a neutral advisor to ensure confidentiality and best-practice was followed at all times.

Impact on the supply chain

Commenting on the impact of the coronavirus on the supply chain, Scala managing director John Perry said: “The UK is relying on the supply chain industry arguably more than ever before. No-one should underestimate the efforts that will be required from drivers, key warehouse staff, planners and management teams over the coming weeks.

“We are proud to be assisting in initiatives in bringing the industry together, and would urge any business looking to offer support, or unsure of what coming weeks may bring, to speak with us.”

He called for greater collaboration in the industry and share expertise in the battle against COVID-19 to help “keep the nation fed”.

New guidance from the Government, in tandem with continued efforts by the industry, hoped to ease some of the burden caused by the coronavirus.

The Government has relaxed food delivery hours to supermarkets and other retailers to help the supply chain cope with demand due to the Coronavirus COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the Groceries Code Adjudicator has urged retailers and suppliers to work together but has called on them to follow some “guiding principles”.
