2 Sisters consultation continues after factory roof collapse

2 Sisters has confirmed that production in the short-term will also be unaffected after the incident at the struggling Pennine Foods site in Beighton, which is facing closure amid heavy losses.

Some 600 jobs are currently under threat at the factory.

The incident occurred on Saturday, with the firm telling Food Manufacture​ that production and the consultation would continue as normal.

“A small section of the corrugated roofing in our despatch area collapsed on Saturday afternoon​,” a spokeswoman said.

“We’ve managed to isolate the area and move goods outward to another part of the factory while it is being repaired. Product supply is unaffected. It is too early to confirm the cause. [This] does not affect the ongoing consultation.”​

Investigate​

The company has confirmed that the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) was immediately made aware of the situation and was continuing to investigate. The HSE has yet to provide comment.

News of the consultation was revealed at the start of October​, after Pennine Foods undertook a full strategic review of the business.

However, it was concluded that operations were not “sustainable for the long term​”, according to a statement from the firm.

Discussions for the future of the business remained ongoing and a “full range of options​” would be considered before any future financial decisions were made, the firm added.

Meanwhile, last month, 2 Sisters announced that it had offered up to 120 former Tomlinson’s Dairies workers jobs​ at one if its Welsh factories following the recent collapse of the business.
