A Leicester flatbread maker is on the verge of moving into a new £8m factory to fulfil growing demand from larger customers in the UK and Europe.

Family owned Leicester Bakery is to undergo a gradual relocation from its premises in Kent Street to a new 2,790m2 purpose-built facility in Hamilton, adjacent to Leicester Food Park, in the north of the city.

The new site will host two additional production lines, while the bakery planned to add 25 staff to its current total of 45. It will be BRC-accredited, allowing the company to fulfil demand from supermarkets.

Founded in 1980 by Mohmed Sabat, Leicester Bakery produces naan bread, pitta bread, naan bread, tandoori roti, naan wraps and chapati.

It has a UK-wide customer base, and exports to several European countries – including Spain, Malta, Germany, Norway and France.

The company hoped the factory move would enable it to triple turnover in five years.

Supermarket opportunity

While its SALSA accreditation has allowed it to supply multiples like Asda and Iceland, the majority of the business is currently geared to supply the independent foodservice and retailer sectors, said Leicester Bakery director Shoiab Sabat – Mohmed’s son.

Having outgrown its current site, the relocation will improve efficiencies – enabling Leicester Bakery to realise its full potential in meeting the requests of its customers, Sabat added.

“Our new bakery shall have a contemporary look with modern machinery installed,” he said. “This investment will lead to increased productivity, meeting needs of various clientele and allowing us to introduce new products to the market.”

Five new industrial units

To complement the new bakery, five new industrial units totalling 2,460m2 in space have been constructed.

Suitable for food-based production, each unit offers a minimum eaves height of 5.8 metres. There is a central service yard providing loading, car parking and designated spaces for each unit.

Reg Pollock, of sole letting agent APB Property Consultants, said: “Hamilton is a popular industrial estate due to its strategic location on the east side of Leicester and proximity to the Outer Ring Road. These units are of an ideal size and spec for a variety of small and medium-sizes businesses.”

He added: “There is a strong and continued demand for industrial space throughout Leicestershire and we have already received a high level of interest for these units.

“The location and the specification make them ideal for food-based occupiers and grow on space for the Leicester Food Park. They will go like hot buns.”
