One of the UK’s biggest breweries gave TV viewers a novel glimpse into its beer-making capabilities earlier week when it appeared on BBC Two’s Inside the Factory series.

Molson Coors’ Burton upon Trent brewery, which produces three million pints of beer a day, guided presenter Gregg Wallace through the brewing journey of Carling on Tuesday’s (12 March) show.

Wallace learned how 0.2mm of yeast was enough to make 1.3 million pints of alcohol, and was shown a line that can fill 165 cans in 5.5 seconds.

The show followed last month’s launch of Carling’s Made Local campaign, which champions the brand’s brewing heritage in Burton. Brewing in the town can be traced back to the 18th century.

More than £100m invested

Molson Coors claimed to have invested more than £100m in the brewery since 2012. It produces an average of 1.8 million pints of Carling a day for pubs and retailers around the UK.

Molson Coors marketing and consumer excellence director Jim Shearer said appearing on the show was “a special experience” for the company.

“We have such an incredible heritage in Burton and our team at the brewery have, quite rightly, an enormous amount of pride in what they do,” he said. “Being a part of this show allowed us to put them and their expertise in the spotlight.

“I think what surprised the show’s production team most was the intricacy of the brewing process against the sheer scale of what we do.

‘Think about what they achieve’

“What was really great for me personally was seeing how, as the filming crew moved through the brewery and talked to the team, our people took a moment to stop and think about what they achieve every day. Having some of that captured and showcased in the programme is fantastic.”

Now in its fourth series, Inside the Factory has profiled the operations of some of the UK’s best-known food and drink brands.

Last month, viewers were shown how Birds Eye’s Lowestoft factory stamps out a million waffles every 24 hours.

The current series is available to view and download on the BBC iPlayer.
