Rum-making returns to Glasgow after 300 years
Wester Spirit Co said the new distillery would meet growing demand for its spiced rum by increasing the previous production limit of 250 bottles per month to 6,000.
It would also enable the company to collaborate and experiment with other brands, company founders Zander Macgregor and Allan Nairn added.
Made in small batches using a Genio still, Wester is a vanilla spiced rum said to offer rich, round, earthy tones mixed with high citrus notes.
Doubles as an event space
The distillery, which is located near bars and restaurants in Partick, doubles as an events space for the likes of concerts, parties and pop-up restaurants.
It is open to public tours, which include insights into the history of rum-making, Wester’s production process and a cocktail masterclass.
Macgregor and Nairn set up Wester in 2017. The pair, who have backgrounds in business and engineering respectively, said the company was borne out of an interest in rum, a passion for small batch craft spirits, the distilling process and the “rich origins” of Glasgow.
‘Innovative rum distillery’
Macgregor said: “After working tirelessly to turn the original, blank-canvas industrial unit into a fully functioning, innovative rum distillery in the heart of Glasgow’s west end, this gives us the opportunity to spread the news of, and our passion for, Scottish rum on a bigger scale.
“We have experienced such tremendous growth since inception in 2017, we’re excited to begin collaborating and experimenting with other brands to grow our product range and develop our ampersand concept in the months that follow.”
To mark the return of rum distilling in Glasgow, Wester has created a batch of limited-edition numbered bottles, sealed with a wax top.
