Dorset Cereals has revealed plans to move its production to a new £5.5m factory in Poole, the fourth relocation for the company in its history.

The move would see the cereal manufacturer move the business outside of Poundbury for the first time in 18 years.

‘Meet growth aspirations’

Commenting on the move, a Dorset Cereals spokesman said: “Our much-loved cereals have been made in Dorset since 1989 and, if these proposals are accepted, we would be able to stay in the county while expanding production to meet growth aspirations.

“Should these proposals go ahead, we hope that as many of our employees as possible would transfer across to our new site – which is situated about 25 miles away – and we would do all we can to help ensure the change is as smooth as possible.”

Dorset Cereals was acquired by The Jordans & Ryvita Company – part of Associated British Foods – in 2014, in a deal reportedly worth £50m.

70 countries around the world

The company produces muesli, porridge and granola products that are exported to more than 70 countries around the world. Up to 80% of its ingredients are sourced from the UK.

Dorset Cereals’ planned move to Poole is one of a number of investments by food and drink firms into expanding their facilities since the start of this year.

Last month, Welsh pie and pasty maker Village Bakery won planning permission to open a new site at an industrial estate in Wrexham, with plans to create new jobs for the area.

Meanwhile, Vimto maker Nichols has unveiled a new end-of-line packing and palletising arm as part of a £4.5m investment into its Ross-on-Wye site.
