Hull-based baker Jacksons is to invest £40M in a new factory and create 100 new jobs, after securing planning permission from the local council.

The new bakery will be built on a 10-acre site in Genner Road on the Willowbrook East Industrial Estate in Corby, which was purchased by the business in February.

The site has been specifically designed to make bread for sandwich manufacturers. Jacksons expected the factory to be operational by summer next year.

Commenting on the business’s expansion plans, md Simon Ball said: “The new bakery will help us grow as a business and allow us to build on the great work we do in Hull.

‘Forefront of bread making’

“We have a brilliant team working on the expansion project and there’s a real buzz of excitement right across our business as we have the opportunity to create something really special which will be at the forefront of bread making in the UK.”

Jacksons is part of the William Jackson Food Group, which also owns the Aunt Bessie’s, Abel & Cole, MyFresh and The Food Doctor brands.

The company has been manufacturing bread at its Hull site since 1907 and manufacturers about 2M loaves a week. It produces 70% of the bread used in UK prepared sandwiches, according to Jacksons.

‘Continue to invest in the Hull site’

Norman Soutar, ceo of William Jackson Food Group, added: “The group and its family shareholders have invested significantly in the Hull bakery over recent years, and indeed continue to invest in the Hull site.

“We take a long-term approach to the individual businesses in the group, allowing them time to grow and develop and we’re very much looking forward to seeing how the next chapter of the bakery’s life unfolds.”

Meanwhile, dairy processor Langage Farm has secured £85,000 of government funding to help create 10 new jobs and win a national contract to supply a UK supermarket with its yogurts.
