WINNER: Kendal Nutricare
In a fiercely contested category, infant and adult nutrition products firm Kendal Nutricare wowed the judges by targeting a specific part of the market that had been overlooked by others.
One judge remarked: “They really understood their market and went after it. In the process, the new owner returned a loss-making business to profit and created much-needed jobs.”
Kendal Nutricare makes infant formula, infant cereals and balanced adult nutritional products under the ‘Kendamil’ and ‘Kendalife’ brands, selling these in the UK and overseas.
It was set up when it bought the former loss-making Heinz factory in Kendal in June 2015. It is on target to break even March 2018 and move into profit in March 2019.
