Environmental initiative of the Year

WINNER:​ ABP UK

ABP’s entry inspired the judges with its deep commitment to achieving environmental progress via two key strategies: Doing more with less and its Smart Steps programmes. These two sustainability initiatives form part of the company’s five core strategies.

Both initiatives involve setting targets, which include key performance indicators for each site while pledging to achieve clear and measurable reductions in carbon dioxide emissions, energy consumption and waste to landfill by 2020.

The targets include: reduced carbon footprint by 30%; zero waste going to landfill; reduced water consumption by 50%; reduced energy consumption by 30%; and reduced electricity usage by 40%.

Smart Steps is about creating a clear, responsive supply chain through means such as its Clear Steps lean manufacturing programme.
