Alara Wholefoods md Alex Smith revealed why he claims his company is the world’s “most sustainable food manufacturer” in this exclusive video interview.

Smith said there were four key pillars to Alara’s sustainability mission, which allowed the company to measure its performance. These were: governance, social responsibility, financial planning, and environmental awareness.

The next step in the strategy was for Alara to work with other food and drink manufacturers to improve the industry’s sustainability standards.

Development of sustainable food systems

Smith said: “Our new mission now is to work cooperatively to inspire the development of sustainable food systems, to enhance our beautiful and biodiverse plant.”

Improving sustainability standards is everyone’s business, said Smith.

“The definition of a sustainable society is going to be lots of people working together,” he added. “We want to be part of the movement.”

Meanwhile, last month, Coca-Cola European Partners teamed up with the University of Reading, in a bid to cut soft drinks packaging by providing students with refillable bottles.
