The first antioxidant product extracted from the stevia leaf has moved a step closer after a development phase.

While researchers have long known that antioxidants are present in stevia plants, PureCircle claimed to be the first company to be able to extract them from the stevia leaf for use in food and drink products.

Through a novel extraction and purifying process, the firm said it could now offer the antioxidant on a global scale – a move it suggested was a “major commercial advance”.

PureCircle is currently sampling the product with customers, and a full rollout is expected after anticipated US regulatory approval in 2018.
