A new generation of whey hydrolysates that can be absorbed more quickly into the body than standard proteins are now available to the sports nutrition market.

Whey hydrolysates are said to be premium proteins that have been finely chopped – or “pre-digested” – meaning they get to work faster on helping muscles recover after exercise.

The Lacprodan Hydro range, from Arla Foods Ingredients, comes in four varieties: a clear variant for crystal-clear beverages; a milk option for high protein drinks; a powder version for shakes; and a gel.

Casual and fitness lifestyle users

They will be targeted at casual and fitness lifestyle users of sports nutrition.

Arla’s Lacprodan Hydro.365, positioned to appeal to elite athletes and bodybuilders, was launched in 2012.

“Life’s too short for slow proteins, and today’s active consumers want sports nutrition products that deliver enhanced performance and recovery benefits quickly,” said Peter Schouw Andersen, Arla’s head of science and sales development.

Euromonitor said the global sports nutrition market will be worth $17.5bn (£15.2bn) in 2020, up from $10.8bn in 2015.
