Dairy can potentially help preserve muscle mass and function as people get older, a leading nutritionist has claimed.

Proteins from dairy possess “potent” muscle-building properties and should play a leading role in mitigating loss of muscle function in ageing people, according to Dr Leigh Breen, senior lecturer in exercise physiology and metabolism at the University of Birmingham.

“Age-related muscle and strength loss presents the public with a considerable socio-economic burden,” Breen said.

“Dairy-sourced proteins may represent a potential means to preserve muscle mass.”
